America 20172018 #1 eBook Gabby Rivera Joe Quinones

Not much plot, but a lot of potential. There are many characters of diverse backgrounds. The "college" classes were fun. I wish it had developed more of a story.

America 20172018 #1 eBook Gabby Rivera Joe Quinones Reviews

love that this comic exists. writing is pretty good, and i'm certain the next issues will be even better.
Let me start by saying I love America Chavez. I have adored this character since I read her in Young Avengers 2, and then went back and found her origin in things like Joe Casey's Vengeance. I've spent the last couple years tracking down and reading all of her exploits and hounding my local comic guy to make sure anything she was in I got. I bought 6 copies of this #1 (all the variant covers) and then went out and bought 10 more copies to give away to anyone who I thought MIGHT have interest.

The victories America's finally got her own title! She's punchy as ever, they've re-worked a the use of Spanish phrases back into her verbalizations (which was sadly lacking in Ultimates), and they're clearly trying to wrap/make sense of all the random loose ends she's been in across the multiverse of Marvel in the first issue. Also in the first issue we get to see a bit more about America herself, about her emotional struggle to find acceptance and how she's feeling about herself and that she's trying to forge a path in life. We get to see her pains about her past, and her poor coping mechanisms (which I think is perfect given this character's backstory) when it comes to some interpersonal relationships. I also love that they have her interacting with friends and teammates outside of her her standard norms.

The Challenges The story feels very disjointed BECAUSE they're trying to wrap up/address several of the different places/teams/comics this character has been sprinkled throughout since her creation which is no small feat, but it makes the first issue seem a little all over the place/jumpy. Some of the references/comments I had to go google (first page) because I didn't understand some of the slang being used which doesn't mean I want them to not be used, but perhaps translation notes in a corner of a panel or page would be helpful? There's undoubtedly visual cues there so you won't be lost, but you may not understand what's really being said in a couple panels (nor story relevant admittedly) because of that.

Over all I love this character, I will continue buying this comic. I am incredibly excited about the space the writer in coming from, but I will admit I am a little hesitant about - as is my current understanding and I could be wrong - a writer with no superhero/comics background coming into comics. I feel like so far they're doing the character's mentality and mental spaces justice, and I'm glad to see that they're trying to address some of the previous storylines/things she's been involved in and wrap up some lingering questions. I'm hoping that since the first issue was addressing a lot of that it'll leave tremendous growth and potential for the stories and arcs they're going to be telling in the future.

I am hesitant - I am hesitant of all Marvel comics since Marvel traditionally likes to set things on fire in their character's lives - but I am also incredibly hopeful and excited for this comic series and its continued run.

As a fan of comics, a queer woman, and someone who loves to punch stuff I'm all in.
America is a different kind of comic adventure. There's superpowers galore, lots of cool fights, but America's strength lies apart from all that. Living up to her name, America demonstrates a lot of what makes the USA so great - diversity, inclusion, and overcoming challenges. This fresh face in comics is a welcome addition to any Marvel fan.
I am so blown away. I thought I'd never read a comic book again but... this is just perfect. I can't.
This is one of the most jaw droppingly amazing things I've read in a long time. Not because it's good, but because it's so incredibly awful. The concept comes across like the power fantasy of a 13 year old boy (the quality of writing is about on that level as well). It's cringe inducingly ideological, but also manages to somehow have a complete lack of self awareness. I have so many questions after just the first issue! For instance America Chavez has lived almost the entirety of her life in an alternate dimension (raised by two lesbians and I'm not even kidding) yet somehow has all the personality traits of a stereotypical American born Latina. How? Why? It's so enlightened it's almost racist.

And yes (predictably, but also to my profound delight) the comic has actual racist subtext. The third or fourth page is a throw away scene where a bunch of ethnically mixed children from the Utopian Dimension (again, not kidding) are attacked by a human like being made of "pure white energy." More like pure gold, am I right?

Spoiler Alert!

She defeats Hitler on the last panel so guess what cisgendered, white America! You have a Latina lesbian to thank for that post-war industrial boom! *mic dropped*
The book spends more time on her personal lifestyle and nothing on explaining why she can do what she does. The first villain is totally bizarre- some kind of energy thingy that inexplicably dies when punched apparently.
Go read this comic right this moment. I love we now have a lesbian woman of color in the Marvel Universe. I had the pleasure of seeing Gabby Rivera speak at Butch Voices this year, amazing experience.
Not much plot, but a lot of potential. There are many characters of diverse backgrounds. The "college" classes were fun. I wish it had developed more of a story.
