Joey, Cole, Haden and Braxton have been a constant in my life since I was five, and I have loved being one of the guys.
I've been cheerleader.
I've been study partner.
I've been listener.
When we're young, we don't realize the profound impact certain people will have on our lives. I had no idea twelve years ago I'd meet four boys who would turn out to be my best friends, my soul mates - my barmy.
Now school is almost done, our last summer together is drawing closer, and I'm trying to hold on to what we have while I still can. After this, we'll have to say goodbye to each other as our choices will take our lives in different directions. But I don't know if our friendship can survive once secrets and surprises begin revealing themselves to us at every turn.
When it's all said and done, will our friendships remain unbreakable? Or will our once strong bond prove to be weaker than we anticipated?
Letting go is harder than I thought, but some changes are necessary.
And finding Laila...finding myself...may be the greatest journey of all.

When a book is able to pull several different emotions from you as you read it, it is a testament to the suburb writing and story telling. I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this book. I have read a couple other of TK's books which were more women's contemporary and this one is YA. As I read it I quickly became captivated by Laila and her group of boys aptly named her barmy (boy army). Friends since childhood, as the reader I quickly became invested in the intricate web that was their relationship. This book surprised me at least 3 times in the most startling different ways. I was nostalgic, wishing I could go back to my high school years and relive them and possibly differently (I have never wanted to go back, never, this book made me wish I could). I teared up, I was angry and I was flat out SHOCKED. All from a YA book that focused on the senior year of 5 high school friends and the evolution and growth of one strong and fierce Laila. She isn't a damsel, she isn't weak. She has her moments, she is human but she was also just so strong. She had the support of her friends who wanted to protect her but at the same time she needed no protection.
I didn't want to put the book down, finding out what would happen next in the story of Laila and the boys. The focus is high school and what comes next for them all, but with that the focus is on Laila and her growth into other relationships and coming to terms with news that alters her view on the world and her family.
I am being vague because so much that was wonderful in this book was discovering everything as it happened. This isn't a drama, angst filled book. There is turmoil, there is high school drama but it is just more there as a reality and not something that is bolstered up to make the story more, it just is.
I will say when I finished, I had to collect my thoughts for over 2 days because I was so mad and sad at TK but it was funny because I was mad and sad in the best way possible and honestly I never knew that was a possibility.
I am going to be bold here and say, I think this is one of TK Rapp's best books to date for me.

Finding Laila Some Changes are Necessary edition by TK Rapp Amy Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Laila Nixon was inducted into the boys club at 5 years old when she first moved into town. These boys have been her peeps all of her life.
Laila is a smart high school girl that doesn’t give a crap what others think of her. She has a foot-in-the-mouth complex—she speaks first, thinks later, which gets her into trouble. She’s a classy chick who’s lucky to have her boys who will stick up for her. Each guy is different, but they all matter to her, and because of them she is hated and envied by the other girls in school. Yes, she can have a good, solid relationship with the boys without it being romantic.
The truth is could one guy feel more for Laila than friendship? Haden is a sweet, quiet, and talented artist. He’s always been one of Laila’s best friends.
Favorite Haden quote “You’re smart and strong. I see everything you’ve put up with and you never let it get to you. You’re comfortable being you. You cuss like a sailor, eat like a guy, and have the looks of a model. From the time we were kids, you were always the coolest chick I knew and I couldn’t help but fall in love with you.” (49) WOW, sweet!
Overall this is a good YA story. It’s about a high school girl finding out who she really is with her male posse. It goes to show you that things don’t stay the same and “some changes are necessary.” Her 18th birthday was the best; the guys really went all out for her.
But what will happen with Laila and Haden after graduation?
Towards the end, story kind of tapered off, becoming less and less interesting.
Laila and her boys (and eventual girls) are awesome. This is a nice, clean story about lifelong friendships and true love... in different facets. There were some definite surprises that I didn't anticipate, so it wasn't predictable at all.
My favorite of her "barmy" was Haden (because Nate, duh), with Braxton as a close second. I just feel like I knew more about these two than Cole and Joey... but I'm super intrigued by Cole's choice for college, and what kind of man he'll become.
I will say... I wish there had been just an eensy bit more 'romance' between Laila and her beau... don't get me wrong, he was sweet and romantic, but there was no hint of - ahem- desires in this book (with four teenage boys as central characters). And I have no doubt it's intentional and will be perfect for its audience. I'm just saying I (selfish me) wanted a little passion. To please my romantic sensibilities, though, there were a ton of sweet kisses on cheeks, foreheads and on the top of her head... and a few on the lips that made Laila weak in the knees. I adored her boyfriend.
What I really like is that I finally have a go-to book that I can recommend when someone asks if I know of a book their daughter could read, or if a reader wants something that's not all heaving bosoms and throbbing members. Absolutely this is that book. They could and should read Finding Laila. It's sweet and thoughtful, and what girl doesn't want four guys who are always there for her, if needed? Not that Laila's needy, she's not. If anything, the boys are overprotective, and that's nice. Laila is strong-willed and independent and she can hang with the boys without giving up any part of who she is. I like that about her.
Finding Laila was a nice introduction to author TK Rapp. I'll definitely read more! 4.5 stars
